Victoria Kung Fu Academy
Everyone has a different reason for wanting to study the martials arts. For some it is a sport leading to competitions and tournaments, for others a form of self-defense. Many join simply to get fit in a nurturing, non-competive environment. Whatever your reasons for joining, kung fu will increase your self-confidence, your fitness level and your flexibilty.
At Victoria Kung Fu Academy, we teach a form of kung fu known as Shaolin Chuan fa Kung fu. This combines movements modelled on the five animals (crane, leopard, snake, dragon, and tiger), weapons training, and chin na, which roughly translated means "to grasp and control".
The purpose of kung fu is self defense. When studying weapons we learn how to defend ourselves from armed attackers before learning to use a weapon ourselves. The primary goal of chin na is to stop an aggressive attack by grasping then applying pressure or twisting without causing serious harm.
In the first year, members learn the basic techniques and self-defense: blocks, falls, kicks, strikes, grappling techniques. Students who attend the required classes (at least two per week) should achieve their purple belt by the end of their first year.
After this, students may choose to continue their training towards black belt. Those who do will refine the techniques they have learned and begin to study more advanced skills such as defense against weapons and sparring (wearing protective gear).
At each belt-level students will earn one "form", a choreographed set of movements that often resembles a dance more than a martial art. These forms teach students to move fluidly from one position or technique to another and allow even novices to feel the grace and beauty of kung fu.
Aside from simply learning kung fu, our classes teach balance, flexibility and provide an excellent aerobic workout.
The studio runs classes Monday through Thursday until 9:30 PM and all morning Saturday. Members may also book
private lessons to suit their schedules.
